Our Story

Serra Vida. The name itself proclaims reciprocity, a fusion of the Taino word Serra, meaning "exchange or barter" and the Spanish word Vida, meaning "life or vitality".

This isn't simply a farm; it's a living tapestry woven from land, knowledge, and shared experience. Established in 2024 as an anchor lessee of the West Branch Commons, our mission is to address systemic barriers and use non-extractive farming practices to bring accessible food to our communities.

Serra Vida Farm launched in Spring 2024, focusing on healthy soil, expanding production, and building community resilience.

As an anchor lessee on West Branch Commons, we grow cost-accessible vegetables and herbs for the Bronx and Delaware County, prioritizing culturally relevant produce.

Our mission is to nourish these communities through equitable food access, mutual aid, and sustainable practices.

What is Mutual Aid?

Our roots in the Bronx are nourished by mutual aid. This concept has historically been the backbone of underserved communities, and means that by working in solidarity, we can weave a web of support that uplifts all. It is not charity; it is a contribution. In our case, mutual aid looks like partnering with the following organizations:

  • West Branch Commons

  • Catskills Agrarian Alliance/The 607 CSA

  • Morning Glory Bronx Community Garden

  • Ujamaa Community Garden

  • Delaware County Food Pantry

  • New Roots Community Farm

  • Corbin Hill Food Project

  • Colectivo Intercultural TRANSgrediendo

  • BQE- BIPOC Queer Expressway

  • Brooklyn Supported Agriculture

Our Land Steward: Sea Matias

I'm Sea Matias, a Bronx-born and raised educator, farmer, and artist with a deep passion for food justice and community building. My journey weaves together over a decade of environmental education experience, six years of farming, and a commitment to empowering others through intentional land practices. My roots run deep in the island of Borikén (Puerto Rico) where I honor my ancestors' wisdom through the land I steward.

I call Delaware County home, where I grow food, raise animals, and contribute to the National Young Farmers Coalition as a Catskills Chapter Leader, fostering resilience and collaboration in our local food system.
